Giving Back in a Casual Way
October marked the one year anniversary of ‘Donate-and-Wear-Denim-Day' and in honor of fire safety awareness month we donated to local Sterling Volunteer Fire Department. We wanted to recognize the many heroes we have right here in our own county and promote fire safety awareness. We’re so grateful Sterling firefighters are willing to risk their lives to save others. To show our appreciation, our employees successfully raised $380 to donate to the fire department.
So all together just how much have we donated? $1756, 10 boxes of clothes, 180 Lbs. of food, 6 boxes of toys, and 4 care packages!!!

Could losing weight ease arthritis pain?
Did you know that every extra pound you carry can equal up to 9 pounds of pressure on you joints! Ouch! Dr. Peyton comments, “Every additional pound you carry equals 3 extra pounds of pressure on your hip joint, 4 extra pounds on your knee joint, and about 9 extra pounds on your patella femoral joint (which you use going up and down stairs, standing up, and getting off the toilet).”
Think about it this way, if you’re 10 pounds overweight that’s 30 extra pounds of pressure on your hip joint. Also think about it in reverse, if you were to lose only 10 pounds you would release about 30 pounds of pressure off your joints.
Seven of our dedicated employees enrolled in an 8 week Biggest Loser Competition. They got moving, started eating healthier, and all together they lost 89 pounds. That’s 268 pounds of pressure off their hip joints, 356 pounds of pressure off their knee joints, and 801 pounds of pressure off their patella femoral joints!

In-Service Training Sessions
Did you know that every 2 years Physical Therapists and Physical Therapy Assistants complete 30 hours of continuing education to renew their state licensure?
How do they acquire these hours? They can attend symposiums, classes, conferences, along with performing independent studies and research.
Donna Burrell attended the Annual Sports Medicine Symposium at Inova Mt. Vernon Hospital on Wednesday, June 30th. Here she heard 4 Orthopaedic Surgeons speak on the most recent surgical techniques and treatment interventions related to the shoulder, hip, knee, and articular cartilage repairs.
To Donna, the highlight and most interesting topic discussed was ACL Reconstruction. Why? Arthritis & Sports Physical Therapy treats many athletes and active patients with ACL Tears. After the symposium she shared this information with her colleagues at the In-Service Physical Therapy Meeting. These are held once a month to share information from seminars, journals, and even presentations from our physicians.
This month Allyce attended a class on effective examination and treatment for the foot and ankle. These sessions help the therapists stay up to date with the latest techniques. Last month Donna and Dawn taught valuable pilates exercises and next month Courtney will present on Myofacial Release.
