Dr. Randall Peyton Featured in AAOS Now Article

Dr. Randall Peyton, Arthritis & Sports’ total joint replacement specialist, recently sat down with fellow orthopaedic surgeons to discuss the merits of robotic surgery in conventional knee replacement procedures.

The article, titled “Point-Counterpoint: Robotic versus Conventional Total Knee Replacements”, highlights the recent popularity of robotic-assisted procedures across the healthcare field. Although it has gained acceptance by many surgeons, this article asks the important question: is this an advancement for patients with knee osteoarthritis, or just another tool in the surgeon’s bag?

Among others, the author posits questions regarding the differences in patient cost and satisfaction, as well as potential downsides, to using robotic assistance. Dr. Peyton comments:

“At the end of the day, choosing robotic assistance is like many options in our field; it is the surgeon’s option to pick what works best for his or her patient. There is no one-size-fits-all choice. Many residents will be trained in computer-assisted surgery and will be more comfortable with that option as they enter practice. Currently, there are no studies clearly demonstrating the superiority of one technique over the other, but, like many topics in orthopaedics, that fact may be subject to change in the future.”
