Randall S. Peyton, MD, is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon specializing in hip and knee replacement at Arthritis & Sports Orthopaedics in Sterling, Virginia. He evaluates adults with hip or knee arthritis, ongoing joint pain, and limitations in walking or everyday activity. His work includes total hip replacement, the direct anterior hip approach, and partial and total knee replacement. He discusses both surgical and nonsurgical options based on each patient’s condition and goals.

Dr. Peyton has practiced orthopaedic surgery in Northern Virginia since 1995. He founded Arthritis & Sports in 1998 and serves as its President and CEO. After earning his medical degree from the Medical College of Virginia, he completed an orthopaedic surgery residency at Johns Hopkins Hospital and fellowship training in adult reconstruction and total joint replacement at the Rothman Institute of Thomas Jefferson University.

A longstanding focus of his practice is refining joint-replacement techniques. His documented work includes designing the Simplified Tensor for total knee arthroplasty, helping develop hip-replacement implant technology, and teaching other orthopaedic surgeons the anterior hip approach. For patients whose arthritis may not yet require replacement, he also considers joint-preserving and nonsurgical approaches when appropriate.

Dr. Peyton’s goal is to help patients understand the source of their joint symptoms, how different treatments compare, and when surgery may or may not be appropriate. He has received numerous professional honors, including recognition in Washingtonian’s 2026 Top Doctors Hall of Fame.
