Castle Connolly Names Arthritis & Sports' Providers Top Docs
Castle Connolly Medical Ltd., America's trusted source for identifying Top Doctors, has selected Orthopaedic Surgery specialists Dr. Randall Peyton, Dr. Matthew Griffith, and Dr. Elaine Ahillen for inclusion in its highly selective list of Castle Connolly Top Doctors this year.
Castle Connolly Top Doctors® are selected by Castle Connolly Medical Ltd. after being nominated by peer physicians in an online nomination process. Nominations are open to all board-certified MDs and DOs and each year tens of thousands of doctors cast many tens of thousands of nominations. Honorees are selected from the nominees by the Castle Connolly physician-led research team based on criteria including their medical education, training, hospital appointments, disciplinary histories, and more.
All told, more than 44,000 physicians - approximately 5% of the nation's licensed physicians - have been selected as Castle Connolly Top Doctors in their regions for their specialties. Dr. Peyton, Dr. Griffith, and Dr. Ahillen were awarded this honor for their superior skills and knowledge as it pertains to orthopaedic surgery.

Dr. Randall S. Peyton has been practicing orthopaedics in the Northern Virginia area since 1995. Dedicated to delivering quality care, Dr. Peyton is President and CEO of Arthritis & Sports, which he founded in January 1998. Dr. Peyton is an orthopaedic total joint surgeon, focused on the treatment of arthritis, sports injuries, and musculoskeletal problems of the hip, knee, and shoulder.
A native of Roanoke, Virginia, Dr. Peyton’s medical career began at the Medical College of Virginia where he received his Doctor of Medicine degree. He then served his residency at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he later acted as Chief Resident in Orthopaedic Surgery. He completed his fellowship training in adult reconstruction and total joint replacement surgery at the prestigious Rothman Institute of the Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. Dr. Peyton has performed thousands of knee and hip replacements.
In addition to his work at Arthritis & Sports, Dr. Peyton is proud to support the continued training of other orthopaedic surgeons, as well as the training of future orthopaedic surgeons. In 2016, Dr. Peyton created Arthritis & Sports’ first fellowship program, which focuses on adult hip and knee reconstruction. Additionally, Dr. Peyton is regularly featured as a guest speaker at surgeon education courses throughout the country (view here). These courses address relevant concepts and techniques for hip replacement, total knee replacement, and ACL repair surgeries that comprise the foundation for the development of new and more complex surgical skills. These courses are regularly attended by surgeons from around the world. Since 2014, Dr. Peyton has presented on anterior hip replacements during numerous courses, including Beginner, Advanced, and Revision Courses in Atlanta, Las Vegas, and Miami, and also Master's Courses in Chicago.
Dr. Matthew Griffith is dedicated to providing state-of-the-art care to patients with sports injuries and athletic, traumatic, and degenerative disorders. His expertise includes minimally invasive and arthroscopic procedures of the shoulder, elbow, and knee as well as reconstructive surgery including total shoulder and reverse shoulder replacements. He is one of the few in the world to remove bakers cysts through the arthroscope, and also performs regenerative procedures like PRP injections.
Dr. Griffith attended Duke University for his undergraduate education and received his M.D. from the University of Oklahoma. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency at the prestigious Hospital for Special Surgery (Cornell University) in New York City. Subsequently, he received fellowship training in sports medicine and shoulder surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital (Harvard University) where he served as an assistant team physician for the New England Patriots, Boston Red Sox, and Boston Bruins.
In addition to his work at Arthritis & Sports, Dr. Griffith is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. Dr. Griffith is dedicated to caring for athletes in the area and is currently the team physician for the Potomac Falls Panthers and Park View Patriots high school football teams.
About Dr. Elaine Ahillen
Dr. Elaine Ahillen is dedicated to providing state-of-the-art care to patients with disorders of the hand and upper extremity with non-operative and surgical treatments. After attending the University of Kansas for her undergraduate education, Dr. Ahillen received her M.D. from Washington University in St. Louis School of Medicine. She completed her orthopaedic surgery residency at the George Washington University Hospital. Subsequently, she received fellowship training in hand surgery at the Christine M. Kleinert Institute for Hand and Microsurgery and fellowship training in sports medicine at TRIA Orthopaedic Center. Dr. Ahillen is dedicated to providing state-of-the-art care for her patients with advanced techniques. Her expertise includes minimally invasive and arthroscopic procedures of the shoulder, hand, wrist, and elbow as well as reconstructive surgery for traumatic and arthritic conditions of the hand and upper extremity. Dr. Ahillen is Board Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. She is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS), as well as the American Society for Surgery of the Hand (ASSH) and the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine. Dr. Ahillen is an active community volunteer, with a particular passion for Therapeutic Horse Riding.
