Linda Osbourn

ACL Reconstruction

In January, a few days before Linda Osbourn and her husband were scheduled to leave for their first New England ski trip, Linda fell on the last run at a local ski resort. After her ski binding failed to release, Linda unfortunately tore her ACL in her right knee.

Linda immediately went to her family physician and the next day saw an orthopaedic surgeon. After examining the knee and reviewing the X-rays, the orthopaedic physician prescribed physical therapy and a knee brace for the rest of her life.

As a cancer survivor, Linda has sought to live her life to the fullest. After radiation treatments, surgery, and chemotherapy, Linda moved to Colorado where she climbed thirty-eight 14,000 foot mountains, skied twenty or more resorts in Colorado and New Mexico, frequently snowshoed and ATV-ed in the Rocky Mountains high country, mountain biked in Colorado and in Utah, and even hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and back out.

After living the dream out west, Linda then moved back to the Washington, D.C. area. Here, in her first two years back, she climbed a local favorite, Old Rag, three times and continued to hike in the Shenandoah National Park.

Linda worked hard to keep enjoying the things she loved, and she wasn’t willing to give them up quite so easily. She wasn’t satisfied with just a knee brace, and as an active 63 (almost 64) year old she was not ready to restrict her lifestyle. So what did she do? She sought a second opinion. Colleagues of her daughter were familiar with the work of Dr. Randall Peyton and highly recommended him.

Linda met with Dr. Peyton and immediately he inspired confidence. Dr. Peyton knew Linda’s active lifestyle and wanted to repair her ACL. A month after her injury, Linda successfully completed her surgery and, with physical therapy, she was back to hiking the mountains of Acadia National Park in Maine that fall without a knee brace!

A year after her injury, Linda finally went on her New England ski trip and enjoyed skiing and exploring (on snow shoes) the mountains of Vermont. She is now ready for spring and summer and looks forward to mountain biking and, of course, hiking. Linda says, “Thank you to you and your team, Dr. Peyton. I love being one of your success stories.”
